Today, I’ve got another Elodie Wrap Dress by Closet Core Patterns to share with you.
It’s only my 4.5th version of this pattern.
Here’s my collection! Three classic Elodie Wrap Dresses, plus a hacked playsuit where I have combined it with the Winslow Culottes.
So, what can I say?
Sometimes, when you know you like a pattern, it can be a good idea to just make it again!
This Elodie Wrap Dress was an entirely unplanned sewing project.
I went to my local indie craft store for sock wool. And then saw this embroidered lightweight denim cotton sitting in the corner of the store.
Calling my name!
It actually reminds me of a fabric used extensively in the latest new season release by Sezane.
It was also very affordable, so I promptly purchased 4 metres – almost the rest of the roll!
My initial plan was to sew a Closet Core Nicks Dress with it. I thought that the Bohemian vibes would work well with it.
But when I went to lay it out, I didn’t have enough fabric.
I was then tossing up between a shortened Nicks Dress or just going with the Elodie Wrap Dress and I decided to keep it simple, going with the latter.
I made this Elodie Wrap Dress exactly the same as my original one in the See you at Six viscose (and the linen polka dot one) – no changes were necessary.
I’m not going to talk much about sewing it, as there is nothing new to say. You can check out the prior posts if you want more sewing details.
Just to say, that I continue to feel that the Elodie Wrap Dress is a dress which just makes me feel pretty great.
I love the long and very wide sleeve – gives me just the kind of arm coverage without feeling claustrophobic that I love.
The wrap feels very secure and it just really gives exactly the kind of swirly goodness that I adore! For me, this is just a classic dress that I can see myself sewing and wearing over and over and over again!
I often associate Closet Core Patterns more with solid and interesting basic wardrobe staples than with dresses – but both the Elodie Wrap Dress and the Nicks Dress are amongst my most sewn-up garments. There is something just so “right” about them!
And, just in case you’re in the mood for an ode to the humble wrap dress, here’s another little collection of my non-Elodie wrap dress adventures:
The Helena Wrap Dress by Just Patterns is very deservedly a sewists’ favourite.I find it visually more interesting than the Elodie Wrap Dress, but I have more Elodies than Helenas in my own wardrobe because Elodie feels more secure at the bust on me. My small bust doesn’t quite fill out the Helena wrap dress enough. Which could no doubt be adjusted and this is perhaps a project that I would want to undertake this summer.
The only other wrap dress I’ve sewn is the Wildwood Wrap Dress. Which I still have as I like it visually, but I have actually never worn it! I find it too tight at the sleeve and the skirt does not feel sufficiently secure to actually wear. It’s also partly due to fabric choice that I don’t wear it. The cotton is quite heavy, so when it’s warm enough to actually wear it, I’m attracted to more lightweight fabrics.
Still it’s pretty enough that I can’t bring myself to get rid of it. One day I will find the right moment to wear it!!
So, what’s your wrap-dress pleasure? Do you have a favourite wrap dress pattern?
