Persephone Pants to Sail Away

A full length photo of the Persephone Pants worn with a striped tee shirt

When I recently set out to take a thoughtful look at my wardrobe, I knew I wanted a pair of Persephone Pants by Anna Allen Clothing in a neutral/camel/sand kind of tone.

I used to, in fact, have a very similar pair in linen. But, they don’t fit me anymore, so the idea was to kind of re-create them.

But better.

For this purpose, I stumbled across this 9oz washed cotton twill at Meter Meter, which fit the blank space I was trying to fill perfectly.

If you actually want some information about making the Persephone Pants, I would highly recommend you check out my post about my previous versions as they contain a lot more detail.

My Persephone Pants

Like my previous versions, I modified the fly to be a zipper fly, I replaced the hidden front pockets with back patch pockets, I increased the size of the darts and I used my Ginger jeans waistband, instead of the straight waistband in the Persephone Pants.

Cuz my body is curved just about everywhere.

As for what size this is, I’m afraid I’m not actually able to help you out there. You see my previous versions of the Persephone Pants have been mostly in stretch denim. This was my first time sewing the Persephone Pants in a rigid non-stretch fabric (which it’s actually designed for!).

Then when you add the fact of some major body changes, I was really starting from scratch in terms of sizing. But, I wasn’t wise enough to actually start from scratch in terms of reprinting the pattern pieces!

I already had a size 10 already cut out. I looked at the pieces and kind re-draw around the edge of the pieces to where I thought a size 14 waist and size 12 hip would probably be. I then muslined that up and it was laughably small! I had to add in an extra 4 centimetres around the side seam area of each leg piece!!!

Ooops.

But, in the end, my final version was actually a bit too big so I increased the size of the back darts to make it fit.

So it was all about making it work.

So, after all that, I have no damn clue what size this is.

Yeah, you’re welcome for the useful information!!

Top-stitching Rabbit Hole

My favourite little feature of these Persephone Pants is that I had some fun with the back pocket top-stitching.

Cuz these the Persephone Pants are sailor pants, after all. So what better than a literal interpretation of the theme in the form of a cute little boat ready to take on some stormy waters across the other side of my butt!

I’ve never done any kind of special top-stitching before and it was soo much fun. I can see how this kind of customization could became addictive pretty darn easily!

And, in case you are tempted for some top-stitching action, for the record, I totally cannot draw to save my life, but you can google “how to draw a ……..” and find something that can help even the most drawing inept person make something decent. (I’m serious bad guys, even my 4 year old has stopped coming to me for any requests for pictures. He’s just like “nah Mama, I need a fish, Papa better draw it for me”)

And for next time…

So these were a fun adventure, they filled a gap and I’ve been wearing them a lot. I still can’t help but feel that there is something that I still haven’t gotten quite right about the Persephone Pants fit around the crotch.

Truth is, I was so enamoured with the Persephone Pants that I basically declared them my favourite pants ever and have made them without modification. But I think it is the perfect leg shape that I’m in love with and that has blinded me somewhat to the fact that the crotch bunches up a bit. I’m thinking of lowering the crotch a bit for my next pair to see if that helps.

Cuz there will be a next pair!!

  1. Anna,
I like the way your Persephone Pants turned out. I want to thank you for mentioning the fit around the crotch area. In every Instagram and blog photo of these pants it seems there is something strange going on in the crotch area but no one mentions it. I was wondering if it’s the way the pattern is drafted and is that the way they’re supposed to fit? I love the wide legs and high waist features and have wanted to order the pattern but don’t want my crotch area emphasized if you know what I mean! You’re the first person I’ve come across who has commented on the actual fit in that area.

    1. I’m also still wondering whether it is just a part of this style of pant or whether it can be fixed!! I’ll let you know once I sew my next pair!!!
